At APEX Thermal Services, we specialize in the design and installation of highly efficient boilers and water heating systems. If you need a new boiler or water heater installed and you are located in Westchester County, Putnam County, Dutchess County, Orange County, Ulster County, Sullivan County, Greene County or Columbia County, be sure to give APEX Thermal Services a call at 845 430 5825.
We prefer to install the most efficient equipment, however, there are many things that contribute toward the final equipment selection. These days, the equipment choices are many, so an educated decision can save you some significant money down the road. A few percentage points in efficiency can add up to hundreds of dollars per heating season and thousands of dollars over the equipment's lifespan. Though dollars are as hard to come by as ever, a decision to spend a few extra dollars up front for a more efficient or future-service-friendly installation (i.e., installing extra isolation valves, in strategic locations), can really reap ongoing energy savings and convenience benefits, when your system is being serviced, in the future.
A worst case scenario is that you have a water leak or catastrophic equipment failure, forcing you to act quickly. Obviously, sometimes you just need to take action, but try to compare several pieces of equipment, if at all possible. Try to learn of reliability, expected life, efficiency rating, reputation of the manufacturer and the longevity of their older models, if and when possible. If this research is not your cup of tea, find a friend or a contractor that you can trust to guide you. Alan J. Paul, the Founder of APEX Thermal Services has been focused on energy efficiency improvement opportunities, for roughly 25 years. If we don't know the answer, our equipment suppliers are there for our total support. We, including the equipment manufacturers, want your project to be a huge success and a win for all parties involved. What better advertisement is there than a successful project and a happy customer?
APEX Thermal Services will provide you with a meaningful conversation and discuss the options associated with your situation and desired goals. Many customers want to reduce their ongoing operating costs. A step up to the next most efficient equipment may be in order. Fuel switching may also make sense. For example, changing from electric water heating to another fuel can save you money every month, but you may need fuel tanks, lines run, chimney, etc. So these decisions are not always simple. We can help you sort through all that in a logical way. That is what we do every day!
So, if you are considering installing a new water heater or boiler, the many changing fuel costs should be considered. If you have natural gas, that is the lowest cost fuel to heat with right now. Electricity is the most expensive. Fuel oil just beats out propane right now, but there are other considerations. The operating efficiency of the equipment may shift propane to a lower operating cost than oil. Oil-fired equipment requires more maintenance than propane. These comparisons should be done to help make the most sound decision for you. The outright cost of the boiler or water heater should assist you in the decision, but please don't forget about operating and maintenance costs. They may ultimately cost you in the long run!
Your equipment selection process may hinge on the fact that you need a chimney or fuel tank installed, or perhaps the proposed equipment may be direct vented (so the intake and exhaust air can actually be run through inexpensive PVC pipe, and right out the wall).
Instantaneous or on-demand water heaters have become very popular lately. Their main savings opportunity is eliminating the waste heat that is typically lost through the walls of a traditional water heater or indirect tank. They have some downsides too:
Output flow/temperature limitations (typically rated with a stated temperature increase at a stated flow rate in GPM, so adequate sizing is critical to your satisfaction)
Typically, they require a larger fuel supply pipe (or wires for electric units) than a standard boiler (they use a lot of energy in a very short time)
Purchase cost and cost of installation (remember it needs larger pipes or wires installed to carry all that energy quickly)
Equipment Reliability (can be extremely sensitive to hard water, effecting reliability and life expectancy)
Field Technician Familiarity/Parts Availability (potential repair/replacement parts difficulties, compared to more common equipment)
Selecting known reliable equipment can save you in the long run. Discontinued models were discontinued for a reason; try and find out why, or you may want to move on.
OK, so there is a potential minefield of equipment choices, efficiency ratings, fuel costs, installation costs and other factors, so it may make sense to converse with an expert. Alan J. Paul, Founder of APEX Thermal Services, is a Certified Energy Manager (with the Association of Energy Engineers). He is completely qualified to assist you in better understanding your choices and available water heating options. Integrating solar water heating equipment with conventional water heating is what we do for a living. We feel comfortable that we will bring you to the most efficient place that meets your budget requirements. Our ultimate goal is to make your water heating and space heating systems more efficient, using high-quality equipment, at a fair and reasonable cost to you.
